Fun Things George Hotz Has Said
A love letter to one of the most based old-school hackers out there ❤

Don't go and try and do something "substantial in the space".
That's how we get Thought Leaders™ and Losers.
Just go do SOMETHING
Can you do SOMETHING?
Yeah you can!
Go and do it.
Try and make it useful to someone
And don't go around asking "what would be useful for you?"
That's annoying.

reads an email
"hope you had a great weekend, though you must be busy ramping up the business, didn't want this to fall through the cracks. still would love to speak"

We are the North Korea of self driving cars,
We are not beholden to anyone else's agenda
[5]
Time? I got plenty. Got nothing but time!
Don't know who all these busy people are and what they are doing, but you literally got all the time in the world.
[6]
Why do I get up in the morning? 'cause I'm BOREDDDD

If you can read the numbers, you're not on drugs

On an island full of engineers you'll have light, whereas on an island full of businessmen you won't.

sufficiently advanced democracy is indistinguishable from trolling
[11]
'working hard is not important'
that's a lie
working hard for other people - that is not important
you gotta work hard on things you care about
[12]
You know how there's organized religion?
Get out of organized programming
[13]
Growth & Hype over actually useful and working products: that's the silicon valley approach to business.
[14]
any place where you have people who think they're gonna Make It, based on some status thing, is not somewhere I wanna be
[15]
anything that's global, and applicable to everyone, I definitely do not want

Impostor syndrome? Sounds like something bitches get.
[17]
Hackers are basically made up bs to sell security products (Scam Economy). At the state level, corporate espionage - sure, they are all hacking each other. But someone hacking your car and crashing it? No one is doing this.
Paranoids running self compiled kernels miss the point: if a state actor wants to get you, they'll get to you - and there's nothing you can do about this.
[18]
people are gonna say oh it's useless trivia (what port is DNS on?)- but if you have exposure to all the right stuff you're going to know all the useless trivia. You just know this stuff, because you spent time with wireshark. Not because you used some janky ass learning system, used flash cards "What port is DNS on?" laughs

We look for two things, and two things only in our candidates:
intelligence
motivation

Fuck frameworks, what you want is a library
[21]
people who sit around talking about how to change culture are not changing culture. armchair anarchists.

On Terminal Value
my terminal value is narrative
I've always seen my life as my memoirs
So I do it for the narrative
A terminal value (also known as an intrinsic value) is an ultimate goal, an end-in-itself.
interpertation: Imagine you’re reading about your own life in a book. You don’t want the book to be boring ass grind about crying yourself to sleep every night and watching TV all day long, now do you? You want to get out there, get rich, fuck bitches and slay the dragon, as it were. Write that history, son. Write it hard.

Yo, I'm just a bro that's trying to sequence some DNA
Excerpts from geohot’s rap
[24]
Don't struggle, transcend them
Use the force, let it go
Headspace like you're moving boulders
[25]
I tuned on an' in, and dropped out
Not clear if I grew up or grew down
Self-doubt
Well I guess I forgot
How a kid to a kid
But I'm pulling my self now
I bought a van, I bought a van
With an energy drink in each hand
Tentatively, going, "fuck plans!"
[26]
Yo, yo I didn't always have skills
But you chilled out with the time that you killed
I was online and on my damn grind
Beggin' the question
What'd you do with your time?
[27]
Flip our bosses off
Roll on heelys by
And make our choices daily
If we wanna try
Live for today, live for tonight
And just ride the mania wave for the rest of our life
But I was smoking weed when I got caught up in some plans
Used to brag that I only thought a week in advance
It was a midsummers night I didn't see the demands
I was hungry and slipped and sold my soul to the man
And when you sell to the devil
The deal is never straightforward
It's honest on paper
But you see the consequence later
You can scream at the world
But that shit doesn't help
The best you can do
Is fucking scream at yourself
You stupid bitch
How could you do me like this
We used to be free
Now we're doing e-mails and shit
You say don't you have a boss
But you're acting so whipped
Okay I fell the for the scam
And Moloch's a dick
[28]
The times are a changing
And if I’m confused
I only imagine how the rest of you feel
But it’ll all be fine, relax, calm down
The fights not for your body
It’s for your mind
[29]
I'm not content with the status quo
But I'm content with the way
My day to day life goes
There's a new coffee shop and it's nice there
I walk there
With headphones I can't hear
[30]
I wonder if younger me would be proud of me
he never doubted me, we made choices
and tried our best to drop out
[31]
is there a place for people
who actually wanna change the world?
and don't just wanna make a buck
and market shit to boys and girls
and fill the ads with products
that are just out of their reach and so
they're depressed and you can sell em fuckin lexapro
[32]
started a company this year
this is straight from the valley throne: it sucks
the only voice left at the party
is telling me that i shoulda known
your 27 and never grown
and what you think / you get to the top / and you're less alone
all the pressures and stressors and headaches
you wake up and feel great
nah, you stagnate
and flip a shit when your uber's 3 minutes late
and can you still make fun of fat people
when your BMI is overweight?
i sorta of feel like i'm out of place
a year goes by you look around
you're down in the shitter
so down you can't be fucked
if they call you a quitter
a loser, a little bitch
who didn't deliver
by the type of guy
who comments and gets triggered
if that's the test
then i didn't prepare
lookin kinda stupid standing in my underwear
should i rock chris and be never scared
or leave there for somewhere
is this feeling just here
or is it -- everywhere?
[33]
in conclusion
society's for suckers
and if you still put in work
you're a stupid motherfucker
Addendum: Fun Things People Say About George Hotz
a comment that nails down his attitude and mindset when troubleshooting shit, which he does essentially non-stop in his programming streams:
He is good at managing his temperament and remaining calm enough to solve each snafu instead of descending into a sperg spiral of directionless thought. He doesn't project himself onto the problem nor does he project the problem onto himself: don't identify with the problems/challenges you’re tackling, don’t take it personally, don't think it's your own personal fault that it happened and if you can't seem to fix it - that’s fine, being hard on yourself doesn’t help and is an offshoot of narcisitic tendencies that would have you believe you can control everything.
are there no sources? or am i just dumb?
